Bio
TJ Sclafani is a composer and performer based in Los Angeles, CA. His music has been performed and recorded by ensembles and musicians such as HEX, C3LA, Synesthesia Sinfonietta, DesoDuo, gnarwhallaby, Flux Quartet, and pianist Alison Brewster-Franzetti, among others. His music has appeared at both the HEAR NOW Music Festival and Dogstar Orchestra, both in Los Angeles. He also scored Marrok Sedgwick’s award-winning 2021 short film, People Like Me. Overall, TJ likes writing music for old friends and new friends, and likes to do fun things with people and things that make sound, and the environment surrounding those people and things.
As a performer, TJ has appeared on stage and in various site-specific spaces as an actor, an operatic baritone, and a chorister. As an actor, TJ has performed in Merrily We Roll Along (Charlie Kringas) and Into the Woods (Cinderella’s Prince) with Brooklyn Theatre Club, Fire Water Night with Yara Arts Group, Muppet Shop of Horrors with A Tribe of Fops, and The Importance of Being Earnest at the Williamtown Theatre Festival. As an operatic baritone, TJ has performed in Songs and Dances of Imaginary Lands with Overtone Industries, The Moon Has Made Us Brothers with the Resonance Collective, and L’incoronazione di Poppea at CalArts, among other performances. As a chorister, TJ has performed and served as a soloist with groups such as C3LA, C4: The Choral Composer-Conductor Collective, EMBER Choral Arts, and the New York Choral Society.
TJ received his BFA in theater with a minor in music from NYU and his MFA in music composition from CalArts. TJ studied voice with Kyle Pfortmiller, Timor Beksbusonov, and Paul Berkholds; and studied composition with Anne LeBaron, Marc Lowenstein, Daniel Corral, Ken Lampl, and Ralph Affoumado.
